Porfolio Review – Final Reminder

The Annual Houston Photographic Society Portfolio Review is upon us. Please review the message from Portfolio Review Chairperson Jim Fife below.

Exhibit Night
Tuesday, October 9, 2012 from 7-9 p.m.
This is the evening where all the members who have put together a portfolio can exhibit their work. This program is open to the public so bring and invite family, friends, neighbors, relatives, etc. There should be approximately 200 plus images based on the current number of confirmed participants. The members who are exhibiting should plan to arrive by 6:30 p.m. so that they will have time to set up their portfolio display. Please remember to bring your artist statement to go with your portfolio exhibit. This should be a fun evening and there will be plenty of time to ask the various exhibitors questions about their work. Refreshments will also be served.

Review Night
Thursday, October 11, 2012 beginning 6 p.m. (note the start time)
This evening is for the Portfolio Review participants ONLY. This is NOT open to the public or the general membership. Please arrive at the Tracy Gee Community Center by 6 p.m. (by 6:15 p.m. at the latest) as numbers will be drawn for the order in which you will sign up for the various reviewers. Please look over the brief biography/profile of each reviewer you were sent so you can better select someone who will be best suited for your work and intent. We are on a very tight schedule so please come prepared so the selection procedure can move along smoothly.

If you have questions, please contact Jim Fife.

August program meeting

What? Program Meeting on Edward Steichen

Who? Jim Caldwell

Where? Tracy Gee Community Center, 3599 Westcenter Dr., Houston, TX 77042

When? Tuesday, August 14, 2012 from 7-9 p.m.

This month’s program will be presented by Jim Caldwell. The subject of the presentation is photographer Edward Steichen.

Edward Steichen was a seminal figure in 20th century art and photography who, working closely with Alfred Stieglitz, created the famous 291 Gallery through which they influenced the acceptance of photography as a legitimate art form and introduced America to the modern art revolution in Europe. His credentials as a painter and photographer of equal reputation helped bridge the gap between them and opened many doors for others.

He did groundbreaking work in editorial, fashion and commercial photography — it is said that he created the very first modern fashion photograph. After covering World War II he returned to start the very first photography department at a major museum, MOMA in New York. While there he created the “Family of Man” book and exhibition, considered the most famous photography book of all time.

This presentation will share some brief biographical notes, but will mostly consist of his (and a few of his contemporaries’) best-known images — you’ll be amazed how many you recognize and that have influenced your own photography.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about this seminal figure in photography, and get inspiration for your own work.
