Title Window Pour Off
Category Gold B&W
Location Big Bend NP, TX
Reason For Making the Image

Window is a special water pour off place at the end of the Windows Canyon at the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend NP, TX. The view through the window rock to another window-like freestanding split rock is spectacular. I liked the rock textures on the sides of the window contrasting the shiny water smoothened surface on its bottom mimicking running water, and the textured split rock opened the view to the far distance.

Title Floor in Florence
Category Gold Color
Location Florence, Italy
Reason For Making the Image The patterns of the inlaid marble floor in the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Flower (more commonly known as “the Duomo”) in Florence, Italy are incredible.  I wanted to emphasize the sense of depth and perspective in this circular basketweave section of the floor.  The legs and feet of the visitor in the upper left portion of the image provide both a sense of scale and the only hint that the rest of the image is a simple, straightforward view of the flat plane of a floor.  (In order to avoid image noise, I rarely use ISO 3200, but in this case it allowed me to avoid camera shake and hand-hold the camera with a 1/60th second shutter speed.)

Reason For Making the Image I enjoy taking handheld photos of municipal fireworks and seeing the amazingly different images as a result. In this case I went a step further than usual inverting the image in photoshop and then converting to black & white. This last step is based on a comment I received during a portfolio review.

Reason For Making the Image The rhythm of the Luminaries on the snow-covered ridge of the adobe building was interesting and when I found a viewpoint to frame the window with them, was exciting. However, photographing this composition under the colorful awning from the other side of the street, made the image in-balance and pop.
